Lieutenant Commander Paul Stamets was a male Human astromycologist and Starfleet officer who lived during the mid- 23rd century. He became part of the team that discovered the mycelial network and helped develop the experimental spore drive propulsion system. In that capacity he served as the spore drive specialist of the USS Discovery intraveling the network hundreds of times.
Sexuality has been a significant theme in the various Star Trek television and motion-picture series. Sexual relationships in Star Trek have mostly been depicted as heterosexual in nature. There have been depictions of bisexual relationships, but always with a twist e.
But fans of the gay couple are in for a treat, with actors Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz promising yet more of their epic love story. We caught up with the actors in New York to talk about the future of our favourite space couple What did you guys think of your Attitude cover last year?
The CBS: All Access drama introduced a gay couple to its audience Sunday — a first in the long-running television franchise. Previously, out actor Anthony Rapp, as Lt. Paul Stamets, made history when he was introduced in episode 3, becoming the first clearly gay character in this universe.
A: In season one I never had the chance, at least on screen, to really deal with the aftermath of the loss. How do I move forward from this? Tilly Mary Wiseman has become a major ally in that.
In Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future there is no place for racial stereotypes as they were still commonplace in the s, or for traditional gender roles. At least theoretically. We need to bear in mind that the original Star Trek had three Caucasian men in the key roles, and that it was made under the surveillance of conservative network directors who reportedly wanted to get rid of the alien Spock as well as of "Number One", the woman in a commanding position.
